The team from the International Centre for Local & Regional Development (ICLRD) were very pleased with the conference organised on May 8th titled " Rural Restructuring; Local Sustainable Solutions to the Rural Challenge" organised at a time of major change in the Rural Development . They were very impressed by the setting for the conference at The Blackwater Valley Community Learning Centre, the hospitality of the Manager & Staff of the community Services Programme, caterer Ann Holland and the local support. The ICLRD are finalising a detail report on the three way Conference linking Duhallow on the Cork/Kerry border with Draperstown/Workspace and the Rural College along with the Aughnacloy/Truagh/Emyvale micro region. They wish to engage with the three areas through the Public/Statutory organisations, the Business& Enterprise sector and the Community/Voluntary sector to establish an active partnership on the Blackwater Valley section of the Blackwater Valley Catahment Strategy as a micro region needing special support.

Congratulations to Heather Watters from Emyvale who has been selected as one of 30 University students from the Republic and Northern Ireland to participate in the Washington Ireland Programme for 2009. The Washington-Ireland Programme for Service and Leadership (WIP) is an 8 week programme of personal and professional development that brings outstanding Protestant and Catholic university students from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to Washington, DC for summer internships and leadership training. In Washington participants gain first-hand experience of a mature political process and are exposed to a culture of diversity. Through an intense eight-week schedule, WIP interns are formed into a team and challenged to develop their vision for the future of post-conflict Ireland. Students gain invaluable practical experience by completing internships in US government, media, business and non-profit organizations. At the end of the summer, participants return to Ireland with enhanced professional and interpersonal skills, as well as a new confidence in their ability to work together to make a difference. Prior to her departure on 6 June Heather is volunteering with Truagh Development Association in cross border cross community peace and reconciliation work across the Blackwater Valley. We wish her every success in Washington.

Study Visit
For the second year running, Monaghan Community Network is hosting seven students from Michigan State University along with Professors, Carol Robinson and Randall in their annual Study Abroad Programme. The students are working with community groups in the North Monaghan area for six weeks. Ann Marie Centlivre from Detroit is based in Truagh and is Truagh and is being hosted by Deirdre & Peadar Mc Cluskey & family,Shanmullagh. She has already been introduced to a wide range of people and the history of the area by members of Truagh Development Association. It is the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls (1607) and the Ulster Plantation 1609. This is central to an understanding of conflict for the past 400 years and the challenge to overcome the past and build a lasting peace. Economic necessity,if nothing else, would point us towards mutal understanding and cooperation. The students are getting first hand experience of peace building in a border area and are also visiting Derry and Armagh during their stay.
